APR is most effective when started within 24-72 hours after taking mifepristone and before taking the second pill, misoprostol. Research has proven a success rate of 64-68% when started within the recommended time frame.
APR involves administering progesterone, a hormone essential for maintaining pregnancy. By counteracting the effects of mifepristone, progesterone can help sustain the pregnancy and is used in fertility treatment for women at risk of preterm labour.
Progesterone is given in one of two ways: through pills taken orally or through injections. The treatment continues through the first trimester of pregnancy.
